I remember my daughter exclaiming to me that very day I met you, “Last night was the first night we slept thru the night in our bed without him!” And I said to her “You sound just like a Mother who loves her baby!” I was a PROUD Grandmother of a puppy named Bruno. And then you became sick. I listened to my daughter over the next few days do everything in her power to make you a healthy and strong puppy like you so richly deserved. The she called me to tell me that she was bringing you to NCSU hospital for MRI’s and spinal taps and I knew I wanted to be there for her. I drove down I-95 so I could be there with her and take some of the burden from her heart and soul and get you to the best doctors. For the next few days I witnessed the love my daughter had for you and I was right there with her to console her. I saw how painful it was for my daughter.

You improved, but we never really knew what was taking the life from you. After you came home I paid you a visit. I knew right away you were Special. I came up with all sorts of plans for your recovery. I thought we should make flyers introducing OUR special dog to everyone in the neighborhood…especially since you could only see out of one eye and you only walked in circles. But you walked. And I started to walk you, at your pace. Wherever your instincts led you I went for the ride. And I noticed that your dog instincts seemed to be the best therapy for you. Our walks were some of the best I have ever had in my entire life. Unlike my daughter who has a career that at times consumes her time and shortens the walk, I had all the time in the world. And time, I knew, heals. Hours and hours of exploring were ours. Before I knew it, you were more than special, you were a miracle. You started to walk me. Up to a few weeks ago you were living “The Dogs Life!” Chasing cats, smelling the roses and falling asleep from the exhaustion of it all. Even though you had to take a daily pill to keep you safe from the seizures that had so changed your life, you were able to live a very normal life of a puppy. My daughter and I shared our puppy tricks. She would SING you commands that she learned on Oprah. I smiled and teased her and and watched her LOVE you. You were so responsive to her love. I shared with my friends my new found love for you and they shared their love stories with me. It amazes me the love we have for our pets and there were many times after watching my daughter with you that I felt I wanted a pet of my own. But instead I chose to share whatever time I could with you. You were beautiful. Oh, you were so strong. I have so many fond memories of hours of play with you. It is those memories I will keep in my heart forever.

Last night Bruno went to heaven.
